Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Vieilles Vignes 2020, Domaine de la Janasse
£99.00
This is an awesome blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and others, from vines planted as long ago as 1920 on a mix of terroirs that complement each other – the famous ‘galet’ puddingstones, sand, red clay and sandy-limestone hillsides. Deep in colour, it smells of black fruit infused with the local ‘garrigue’ herbeage. Even when young, the tannins are super-silky and fine, meaning that you do not need to wait for years to enjoy it. And yet, the wine’s concentration and balance are such that it can be cellared 10-20 years without difficulty.
