A classic Pauillac: black-fruited, balanced and fine, with an understated concentration and balance that gives it the capacity for extended cellaring. Since the 1830s, Château d’Armailhac (or Mouton d’Armailhacq, as it was then known) earned a reputation for quality through innovations such as barrel disinfection, fining and the creation of a ‘second wine’ (for consumption in local taverns) to preserve the reputation of the flagship brand. These measures resulted in the wine fetching double the price of its neighbours, despite their originally haveing been more highly reputed. Just over a century later, the estate was acquired by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who, despite re-naming it a couple of times, continued the tradition of elevation of its quality. In 1989, Baroness Philippine decided to restore the estate’s original identity.
